Artist’s Statement

Combining the unique fluid qualities of watercolor with an ever-changing palette choice Brian works to express the hidden essence of the world we live in.

With focused attention and quiet observation Brian discovers the local environment. With time these surroundings reveal an essence not so readily seen or felt on a day to day basis. Sometimes a hidden scent or an unusual set of colors will arise. Sometimes an unseen reflection of the viewer will present itself. Though at times fleeting it is these concealed perceptions Brian wishes to capture and present in his work.

Elemental to Brian’s work are the strong, simple compositions. Using uncomplicated lines and never revealing an obvious, detailed subject Brian encourages the viewer to engage, interpret and participate in the art itself.

Color has its own voice. Brian is open to using all colors in all combinations. Trying not to be restricted any way. The same with subject choice. Always open to whatever arises at that time.

All subject matter is available at all times.

Though remaining open to the choices of elements in Art, Brian’s work remains cohesive and recognizable. Brian wishes the viewer to take a deliberate and paused look and feel any hidden reactions and emotions that arise. Notice and feel this.

About the Artist

Hi! I am a painter, woodworker, and sculptor working out of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Originally from the Midwest I earned a B.A. in Design from Southern Illinois University. I relocated to Chicago early in my career. After gaining experience in the design field I opened a custom woodworking shop in Chicago. Here I designed and built furniture and cabinets for residential and commercial clients. Always enjoying the designing aspect of the craft and creating furniture with strong, simple elements and never adorned with unneeded details.

In 1998 I was approached by South Suburban College in South Holland Illinois to teach a woodworking class at the Bernard Kleiman Joblink Learning Center in East Chicago, Indiana. After a very successful inaugural class I was encouraged to offer additional classes to the students. With that encouragement I was able to create the “Furniture Design and Woodworking Program” at the Joblink Center.

Over the next 7 years I created a comprehensive program including beginner, intermediate and advanced classes. Courses included Tables, Chests, Boxes, and more. And the all-time favorite of the students, the Grandfather Clock class. My students were the best. Always interested, committed, and gracious they designed and built pieces that are truly works of art! I am grateful for having worked there and having met so many wonderful people!

Always loving and inspired by the rocks and mountains, my wife Nancy and our two daughters Karitas and Eren moved West for the second part of our journey. Now living in “The Springs” I am painting with watercolor and continuing to work with wood in a creative way. I am concentrating on combining watercolor and wood sculpture in a new unique process. Good work!
